Description
AUTOMATIC POWER FACTOR CORRECTION PANEL
An APFC Panel (Automatic Power Factor Correction Panel) is an electrical control panel designed to improve the power factor of an electrical system automatically. It is widely used in industries, commercial complexes, and large residential buildings where there are heavy inductive loads such as motors, pumps, compressors, and transformers.
What is Power Factor?
Power factor is the ratio between real power (kW) and apparent power (kVA).
A low power factor means more losses, higher electricity bills, and poor efficiency.
In India, utilities also impose penalties if the power factor falls below a certain limit (generally 0.9).
Role of an APFC Panel
The APFC panel automatically monitors the power factor using a microprocessor-based relay (power factor controller).
It switches capacitor banks ON or OFF depending on the load requirement, maintaining the desired power factor (close to unity, i.e., 1)
🔹 Main Components
APFC Relay / Controller – Brain of the panel, senses the power factor and controls capacitors.
Capacitor Banks – Provide reactive power (kVAR) to improve PF.
Contactors or Thyristor Switches – Switch capacitors in and out of the system.
Protection Devices – MCCBs, MCBs, fuses, relays for safety.
Bus Bars and Wiring – For power distribution.
Cooling System – Ventilation fans or heat dissipation arrangements.
🔹 Benefits
Improves power factor automatically.
Reduces electricity bills by avoiding penalties.
Enhances system efficiency and reduces line losses.
Increases capacity of the existing electrical system.
Extends the life of equipment (motors, transformers) by reducing overheating.
